Philosophy of Art - Anjali Purohit
ARTIST STATEMENT
Anjali Purohit is a reclusive artist working from Mumbai (Bombay) who has been articulating her sensibility with paper, paint and canvas. She has studied at the Sir J J School of Art. She held her first solo show in Bombay in 1995 and has been exhibiting her work since in the city as well as outside.
She believes that art, like language or music, is a medium of communication whereby the artist attempts to express her reaction to the world - nature, people, events, emotions, memories and situations. Something in each of these experiences strikes the artist as significant, poignant, moving, curious or in some way worthy of note or observation. She interprets such an aspect of reality or phenomenon and presents it through a medium or form that will best convey that significance or meaning to the viewer. If this dialogue happens, then the creation is complete.
She paints in an impressionist, modern realist, expressionist style. Her works offer understated comment, tongue in cheek observations, nostalgic ruminations or then, sometimes, quirky, ironic asides. She explores an aesthetic that interprets personal expression in its social context and presents a perspective that suggests such a construction. Anjali is also keenly interested in academics and has studied philosophy at the Bombay University. She holds a PhD in the subject. Sometimes her creativity finds expression through the pen and then she paints her pictures with words on paper. She is a published author and her stories have found a home in online literary journals such as chowk and desilit and in print as well.
Anjali has been a witness to the sad history of Mumbai metropolis for the past thirty five years and most of her paintings reflect her exploration of this relation with her land and its people. She is presently working towards putting together fresh paintings for her show at the Nehru Centre Circular Gallery to be held from 21st to 28th October 2008.
More work from her easel can be found on her website www.newartindia.com

“Grounded” is so good…
My favorite from Anjali’s collection is not here, but out of these, I adore Spiral Memories a lot. I think its brilliant!
To be able to yield both pen and brush and depict life is a superb feat indeed and very few can achieve it with as much skill and detail as Anjali does.
No parking is very interesting
Love spiral memories too..!
Agree with Rita about Anjali’s superb skill and appealing details..
