Hero - Zhang Yimou

Posted by Ankur Sharma On October - 16 - 2008 5 COMMENTS

The land of China is ruled by six different dynasties that are embroiled in never ending conflicts with each other. Out of these the Qin dynasty, ruled by Emperor Qin Shi Huang, is the most powerful. However, constant attempts are made to assassinate Qin, who is spending sleepless nights fretting over his life. Among all the assassins, Qin is particularly mortified of Broken Sword, Flying Snow and Long Sky (Cheesy names, I know!), who are supposedly the best warriors (and I really mean best – they are oblivious to concept of gravity or physical constraints)…

Raise the Red Lantern - Zhang Yimou

Posted by Ankur Sharma On August - 19 - 2008 1 COMMENT

A lantern can only accentuate the beauty of everything around it, but the shadows it creates cannot hide the deceit, lies and misery that permeate through the spirits and ghosts of the house it illuminates. Raise the red lantern, a stellar attempt by the Chinese director Zhang Yimou, manages to expose those very ghosts that lurk behind the resplendent façade of the residents of a palace. The fact that the palace and the household is an oblique reference to the Chinese dictatorial government gives this movie its double edged sword like character…

Fallen Angels - Wong Kar Wai

Posted by Ankur Sharma On July - 7 - 2008 2 COMMENTS

Wong Kar Wai doesn’t believe in making films on routine people or subjects. And it’s not just his idiosyncratic characters and breathtaking visuals that blow you away; he somehow waves a magic wand and infuses life into a mannequin, making a memorable character out of it. Not to say his actors aren’t excellent, somehow it’s his own majestic treatment – his skilful puppetry – that gives his works a character.
Fallen Angels, originally meant to be a part of Chungking Express, was spun off into a separate movie because of its deviation…

My Blueberry Nights by Wong Kar Wai

Posted by Samakshi On June - 15 - 2008 1 COMMENT

Director Wong Kar Wai has all his dough ready for this colorful and extravagant desert of a film. He preheats the expectations of a magnificent filmmaker to a 100 degree F, tosses succulently fresh blueberries (Norah Jones and Jude Law) in a bowl of beauty, love and loss, sprinkles into it the vinegary of heartache [...]

In the mood for love (Fa yeung nin wa) - Wong Kar Wai

Loneliness, Loneliness, Loneliness…the things it makes one do…
Some use love as an ointment for loneliness and rejection, while others redeem themselves of this anathema with the ambrosia of love. And then there are those, who look for the ointment, find the ambrosia instead and yet do not taste it.
This tale is dedicated to the third [...]

Chungking Express - Wong Kar Wai

Posted by Ankur Sharma On June - 2 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

It’s no wonder that Chunking Express is about relationships, (infact this is about two separate, disconnected ones) – almost all Wong Kar Wai movies are. Its simplicity, however, is truly differentiating. And this simplicity reflects in Wong Kar Wai’s statement about Chungking Express, “After the very heavy stuff, heavily emphasized in “Ashes of Time”, I [...]

Farewell My Concubine (Ba wang bie ji) - Chen Kaige

Posted by Samakshi On May - 16 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

Farewell My Concubine is one of the few rare films that present history, beauty, emotion and art with such outstanding craft and skill. This film qualifies as one of the most unique films I’ve watched in a long time.
The movie is an exposé of the eminent Beijing opera that sprung up in the 18th century [...]
